For Instant Fun, Just Add Water!

Summer is here and what better way to cool down from the hot rays than a swim in either our free public swimming pool or one of the popular local swimming holes.

Greytown Memorial Baths

Greytown Memorial Baths are in Kuratawhiti Street conveniently located next to the playground and campground. Not only is there plenty of free parking, but it’s also free entry into the swimming pool. Alongside the main pool is a toddler pool, shade, and a small grass area for a blanket and a picnic.

Swimming Spots in Greytown

Too many people? How about an invigorating river dip? Greytown is fortunate to have the beautiful Waiohine river that flows from the Tararua ranges, across the valley and meets up with the Ruamahanga River as it heads out to Palliser Bay. There’s easy access to some great swimming spots. The river is ever-changing, and so are the swimming holes, so take time to explore the river banks.

The Gooseneck
Drive down towards Woodside Station, carry on to Underhill road and turn right. You are now on a gravel road so take care of oncoming traffic. Make your way down Waiohine Valley Road. You will follow the river until you reach a Fish and Game sign on the right near the end of the road.

Kuratawhiti Street
Head down to the end of Kuratawhiti Street onto the gravel road, take care for walkers, cyclists, tractors and oncoming traffic. As you reach the end, you can park or continue driving turning left or right. Both ways will take you to the river. You can also reach the same destination by taking the walkway across farmland from Udy Street.

Bridge on State Highway 2
As you head out of Greytown heading north on State highway 2, you will reach a bridge. You will likely see swimmers here. There is easy access down to the river on the Greytown side of the bridge heading towards Carterton. Sometimes you might see some local daredevils jumping from the bridge!

Before you head out to either the pools or down to the river, be prepared for the sun — food, water, sun hats, sunscreen, and swimming accessories.

We recommend taking a delicious picnic.  The French Baker has the best artisan bread available, get in early, they can often sell out very quickly. Try one of their crusty baguettes or buttery croissants. Fresh Choice has a great deli with all your delicatessen needs from fresh salads to deli meats. Stay hydrated by taking fresh water, exclusive to Blackwell and Sons are SIC bottles for cold drinks and ‘internal hydration’ after your swim.

For your sun smart needs, visit Adorne for sun hats with UPF 50+ sun protection and stylish sunglasses. Hall has elegant raffia sunhats and keep all your belongings together safely with one of their fashionable raffia market bags.

Try Jet for fun swim towels and humorous canvas bags. You will turn heads with their great slogans.

The friendly staff at the Greytown Pharmacy can advise you on the best sunscreen for you and your family or visit Alluminus Beauty Therapy who recommend Coola Sun Care. This is an organic range with ease of a spray-on sunscreen or the usual cream type application, not to mention the incredible flavours.
