Polish up your jewellery, starch your shirts and preen your pooches, because this June, Greytown is going all out to celebrate our monarch’s birthday with a village-wide celebration right through the holiday weekend.

“We’re going to dress the town with Union Jacks, hold a special daily Queen’s Raffle Prize Draw for businesses to reward their customers with, there’ll be an exhibition of royal memorabilia at the Town Hall and our restaurant and café members will be creating special British- inspired menu items for their customers to enjoy,” says Daryl Watt, spokesperson for Greytown’s business marketing group, Country Village Heaven. “All of this activity is designed to bring visitors to Greytown for the long weekend so our members can benefit while creating a special event the community can have fun with as well.”

“Many of New Zealand’s festivals and events are held in the summer months; but winter is the time when everyone needs a boost, especially local businesses,” says Daryl. “And the Right Royal Knees-Up weekend on 2, 3 and 4th June doesn’t rely on sunny weather to make it successful. We want everyone out with their tweeds, hats, scarves, and umbrellas if they need them, to join in the festivities.”

The event is the first of what organisers hope to be an annual celebration for Greytown. A special Doggy Treats sponsored Right Royal Dog Portraits competition will be held enabling people to pose their dog on a beautiful throne and have an official portrait taken to enter into a Royal Pooch Beauty Contest.  Other activities include store window displays, community tug-of-war competitions for local sports teams,  and music, buskers and theatrics on Main Street right through the weekend. Locals are invited to join in the celebration by dressing up in their royal finery or cockney casual.

“It’s all terribly British and designed to be a lot of fun,” says Daryl. “If you’ve never bobbed your noggin in an icy cold barrel of water for an apple, your chance is coming.”

Country Village Heaven has partnered up with regional tourism group, Destination Wairarapa, to create the Right Royal Knees Up Weekend.

“This is a fantastic collaboration for us and Greytown’s business leaders,” says Barb Hyde of Destination Wairarapa. “It proves once again that a small town like Greytown has the creativity and energy to bring an event like this together. The 2018 Right Royal Knees Up weekend will be good for all of Greytown’s businesses as it will get a lot of media attention. That fills up the town and creates economic activity that benefits everyone.”
